Dubai City Facts
Geography - The second largest of the seven emirates, which make up the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is located on the southern shore of the Arabian Gulf. It has an area of some 3,900 square kilometers. Outside the city itself, the emirate is sparsely inhabited and characterized by desert vegetation.
Economy – Oil contributes just 20 percent of economic production. Trading, manufacturing and services – including tourism – now dominate the economy.
Time Zone – GMT + 4 (9 hours from Eastern Standard ).
Currency – UAE Dirham (AED).
Climate - Dubai has a sub-tropical, arid climate, with perfect weather for at least six months out of the year. Rainfall is infrequent and happens mainly in winter. Usually it amounts to about 13 centimeters, spread over five days per year. Temperatures range from a low of about 10 degrees Celsius on winter nights, to a high of 48 degrees Celsius in the midday summer heat.
Dubai Population – 857,233 (According to Dubai Municipality, 2004). 602,462 of the total population are males and 254,771 females.
