Dubai Shopping

Dubai has many attractions for visitors and one of its greatest is its superb shopping. Indeed, the city draws large numbers of "shopping tourists" from countries within the region and as far a field as Eastern Europe, Africa and the Subcontinent.
As an open port with low import duties, Dubai's retail prices are reasonable and the variety of products available matches that of any other major international city. Freed from taxes imposed elsewhere, many top brand name products are cheaper in Dubai than in their country of origin. Whatever the visitor's tastes -- couture from Paris or Milan, hi-tech from Japan, or a piece of silver Bedouin jewellery -- he or she will find it at the right price in Dubai.
There are many excellent supermarkets stocking a comprehensive range of foodstuff, including most major international brand name items. Most of the large supermarket groups have vegetables and fresh meat flown in from Europe, Australia, New Zealand etc. Pork is available from supermarkets for non-Muslims but sold from separate counters. Local vegetables can also be bought and these are available seasonally. Fresh fish is excellent and meat is of good quality. Fresh, long life and powdered milk is available in Dubai. Dubai Municipality keeps a close watch on the expiry date of products.
Alcohol is obtainable from two suppliers in Dubai who have several outlets. It is not possible to buy alcohol without a license. These are issued by the Police Department only to non-Muslims holding a residence visa. The alcohol license is valid for one year only, but can easily be renewed.
Shopping Mall
Attractive modern shopping plazas are conveniently located throughout the city, housing a wide range of shops, boutiques, supermarkets, restaurants and fast food outlets.
Leading malls in the Deira district include Al Mulla Plaza, the Inter.Continental Plaza, Abu Hail Shopping Centre, The Galleria, Al Ghurair Centre, The City Centre, The Al Manal Centre, The Center and Hamarain Centre. On the Dubai side of the Creek, the Wafi Mall, Bur Juman Centre, and Holiday Centre are among the largest complexes.
Normal shopping hours are 8.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. - 8.00 p.m., Saturday to Thursday. Most shops are closed for a period on Friday. Bargaining is normal in the souks (markets) but not in supermarkets or modern shopping malls.
The Jumeirah district has Magrudy's Shopping Mall, Markaz Al Jumeirah and The Beach Centre. In addition, there are many top class department stores and boutiques throughout the city. Dubai is an important regional retail center attracting shoppers from throughout the Middle East and as far a field as Russia and Thailand. All products are therefore available, from clothing to cosmetics, toys, book and electronic products.
